We provide initial funding for startups to create MVPs
We mentor startups to follow ethical practices.
Students learn about venture capital & angel investing first-hand.
We negotiate SAFEs with startups on a case by case basis.
Our managing directors are knowledgeable in many financial subjects.
The PCV team also helps funded teams apply to the local startup accelerator called the HotHouse to receive a grant to further their business.

  • Quarterly Newsletters: Our team carefully constructs a quarterly newsletter for all of our donors, with in-depth updates of the progress of the groups we fund.

  • Networking & Connections: PCV frequently hosts networking sessions, which provides the chance for our donors and entrepreneurs to meet and exchange ideas and advice. Additionally, we'll act as a liaison between any two groups of people that might want to meet through our network.

Apply for Funding

Please note the following
  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants are typically contacted within 1 to 2 weeks after the date of the submission

  • When we contact applicants, we may schedule an in-person interview to provide a more detailed overview of the funding process and answer any questions

  • The funding process typically takes about 1 to 2 months depending on whether or not the applicant is already a C corporation

  • Please specify whether you are interested in receiving equity or grant funding from PCV on the last question of the application

Our Team


Vlad Killiakov
Managing Director

Vlad is a fourth year Electrical Engineering student who has been actively involved in Cal Poly entrepreneurship scene. He has been a part of multiple start-ups and participated and placed in a number competitions with them. Vlad is interested in quantifying the performance of early stage start-ups and developing ways to enhance those metrics.


Marc Rippee
Executive Director

Marc is a third year Business Administration student who has been actively involved in several OCOB organizations. He is the President of the Cal Poly Investing club as well as an experienced consultant for Mustang Consulting. Marc is interested in supporting Cal Poly startups by helping them get to a point where they are comfortable with the direction their company is headed as well as helping devise an execution plan to get them there. Following graduation, Marc will start a career at PwC in their Deals Strategy group in San Francisco.


Tiffany Yeung
Managing Director

Tiffany is a second year Business Administration and Information Systems student. She has started several businesses and is very involved within the entrepreneurial ecosystem within San Luis Obispo. She enjoys helping other young entrepreneurs and is excited to be a part of the Poly Canyon Ventures team.


Shobhit Asthana
Managing Director

Shobhit is a third year Math and Data Science student. He started a student-run consulting firm that provided a variety of advisory services to businesses in SLO. For the past year, he has also been interning at a buyside growth fund based in SLO where he evaluated private and public equities for the company's venture capital and public portfolios. Shobhit is interested in utilizing his analytic skills to value and benchmark startups.


David Lee
Managing Director

David Lee is a Second Year student at Cal Poly SLO studying Economics with minors in Statistics and Computer Science. Growing up in the Silicon Valley for his whole life, he has developed interests in the Technology industry and has developed interest in Management Consulting, Business Operations, and Product Marketing/Management. David is looking forward to working with PCV and wants to learn about up-and-coming companies and help evaluate their operations to provide them with the proper counseling to further their businesses.


Evan Yap

​Evan is an entrepreneurial 2nd year Biomedical Engineering Major at Cal Poly. He's always brewing up ideas and hopes to make at least one of them successful one day. He has developed a software skill set toward website design and hopes to minor in Computer Science at Cal Poly before he graduates. He's excited for PCV and proud of building this new website for them!


Tali Pilip
Director of Marketing

Tali is a 3rd year Business student with a concentration in Marketing. She is a part of the American Marketing Association at Cal Poly and hopes to work in advertising in the future. She is currently working on marketing for a Bay Area tech startup.


Cayden Phipps
Marketing Associate

Cayden is a second year Industrial Engineering student with a passion for entrepreneurship at Cal Poly and outside of it. He has been involved in the digital marketing space for 2+ years, and has played integral roles in the scaling of multiple 6-figure businesses. Cayden is interested in spreading the message of PCV through digital channels to generate community awareness and leads.


David Rudolph
Director of Public Relations

David is a second-year Philosophy student actively involved in the entrepreneurship scene at Cal Poly. He has been working on a local start-up called Kick-it-Points alongside holding a board position for the Cal Poly Entrepreneurship club. David is interested in promoting the Cal Poly Start-Up scene by bridging the gap between Venture Capital and the Cal Poly student body community.

Sean Reilly
Board Member

Sean is a 5th year aerospace engineer and applied math undergraduate. He has previously worked for Franklin Templeton’s equity team and is currently interning at a boutique investment bank in Silicon Valley, and looking forward to applying his professional experiences and growing network to drive Poly Canyon Venture’s mission forward.

Nathan Johnson

Nathan graduated form Cal Poly in 2017 and currently works for the San Luis Obispo-based start-up WhiteFox Defense. Before that he worked in technology commercialization and private equity. He served as the director of Venture Capital at the Cal Poly Investing club for two years and has advised Cal Poly and UC Berkeley startups.

Francis Yuen

While at Cal Poly, Francis founded and worked at multiple Cal Poly start-ups. After graduating in 2017, he went to work at GoDaddy as a Software Engineer. He’s been a part of Cal Poly’s Investing and Entrepreneurship clubs.

Tod is the executive director of Cal Poly’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and the SLO Hot House. As the 8th employee of Amazon, he was critical to their growth and success.

Dan Banfield

Dan is the controller of Cal Poly Corporation. He is the lead accounting officer for the corporation, with management responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations.

Christie Kelly

Christie currently managers special projects for an international nuclear consulting firm. Prior experience includes; CEO of a cancer non-profit start-up, retail facilities project management for Patagonia, large-scale disaster management for FEMA and running her own construction management service company. She is a serial volunteer, fundraising conceptualizer and passionate about rescuing racehorses.

Scott is a financial advisor at Natural Investments LLC. He focuses on investment and personal values alignment, clean technology and alternative energy investments, fossil fuel company divestment, sustainable retirement planning, and the overall building of durable financial prosperity for clients.

Lindsey is the founder of Monde PR, a San Luis Obispo-based communications firm specializing in technology. Prior experience includes managing public relations in-house for health-tech startup babylon and prior to that, global retail website TopCashback.

Joshua Geffon

​Joshua is a strategic partner to entrepreneurs, executives and in-house legal teams, collaborating with innovative companies throughout their life-cycles, from nascent stage startups to billion dollar public corporations. He regularly advises startups and emerging growth companies, conducts mergers and acquisitions for middle market and public corporations, and provides counsel and advice to boards of directors and senior management on corporate governance, intellectual property and technology transactions. Joshua’s experience includes a significant number of purchase and sales transactions.

Over 25 years of Executive Sales, Marketing and Operational leadership experience in Consumer Internet, Mobile and Enterprise SaaS Global organizations. My key focus has been on helping Start Ups and early stage companies go from $0 to over $100M in revenue and helping to build A+ cross departmental teams at an operational level of excellence expected by management teams and Boards. I have helped these companies raise over $150MM in debt and equity financing from many of Silicon Valley's top tier VC's and continue to personally invest in many of the companies I am affiliated with.
